In Austria, sole entrepreneurs and civil-law associations of lawyers (GesbR) prevail.

Since 1990, lawyers have also been able to form a partnership, which is registered in the Business Register:

• Offene Gesellschaft (OG) (general partnership) or 
• Kommanditgesellschaft (KG) (limited partnership) (limited partners may be the spouse, children, retired lawyers). 
• Since 1999, the legal profession may be exercised in the legal form of a limited liability company (GmbH). Since 1999, lawyers have also been entitled to establish branches, in addition to their registered office.

Since 2013, lawyers may choose the special form of a GmbH & Co KG (a limited partnership where the general partner is a GmbH).
